Manzanita Burl
The Manzanita Burl Necklace is a rare and striking piece, shaped by nature and time. Known for its deep swirling grain, this burl shifts effortlessly between rich reddish-brown tones and sudden bursts of golden yellow, creating a mesmerizing contrast that makes each piece truly unique. Manzanita, with its smooth, twisting branches and fiery hues, has long been revered for its beauty, strength, and resilience.
This particular manzanita burl was gifted by Ben, a collector of all things unique, who recognized its rare and captivating qualities. But the history of manzanita runs even deeper—the native Ohlone people once used this very wood in their daily lives. They crafted digging sticks from manzanita to pry oysters from the rocks and mud along salt ponds. These oysters were then either prepared in underground earthen ovens or strung up to be smoked, an ancient tradition that speaks to the resourcefulness and connection between the land and its people. To wear this necklace is to carry a piece of California’s natural and cultural history.
Finished with Rubio Monocoat, a plant-based, food-safe oil, the wood’s smooth texture and fine finish highlight its natural grain patterns, making it as pleasing to the touch as it is to the eye. Suspended from a durable braided leather cord, adjustable from 10 to 20 inches, it offers both comfort and versatility. At just 4oz, it is lightweight yet carries the depth of its storied past and rich origins.
The Manzanita Burl Necklace is a piece of living history, a celebration of indigenous traditions, and a tribute to the wild beauty of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Whether worn as a symbol of resilience, a nod to craftsmanship, or simply for its bold and vibrant aesthetic, this necklace is a statement of nature’s everlasting artistry.
